The common genet has a slender, cat-like body with a small head and pointed muzzle. It has a pale grey coat, with numerous black markings and a stripy tail.
Although originating in Africa it was brought to the Mediterranean region as a semi-domestic animal about 1,000 years ago where they now thrive.
Adults are crepuscular meaning their highest levels of activity are following sunset and just prior to sunrise, resting during the day in hollow trees or among thickets. Both male and females scent mark in their home ranges with females using scent glands on their hind legs and males often spraying urine, rather than using their scent glands. This is done primarily during the breeding season to attract a mate.
IUCN Red List status: Least Concern.
The Common Genet is listed as Least Concern as it has a wide distribution on the African continent, they have a very broad habitat tolerance and are present in numerous protected areas.
