Sylvia’s Leaf Frog, one of the world’s most spectacular frogs remained under the radar of zoologists for almost 100 years. The first of this tree frog species was originally collected in Panama in 1925 but has remained confused with the Splendid Tree Frog, a very similar species, ever since.
In 2018 and after years of genetic research, Sylvia’s leaf frog was officially described as a new species. There were also some anatomical differences in the frog that made it identifiable from other similar species. These include skin pattern, eardrum size, hands and feet and also their call.
IUCN Red List status: Not Evaluated
Sylvia’s leaf frog was reclassified in 2018 so there has been little work done on assessing the wild population of this species.
