AXOLOTL

The axolotl is a truly unique amphibian, best known for retaining its juvenile features into adulthood – a trait known as neoteny. Native to the ancient lake systems of Xochimilco in Mexico City, axolotls are entirely aquatic and breathe through feathery gills on either side of their heads. They have an incredible ability to regenerate lost limbs, spinal tissue, and even parts of their brain. Unfortunately, they are critically endangered in the wild due to pollution, habitat loss, and invasive species. However, they remain popular in laboratories and aquariums worldwide due to their fascinating biology.
